What should you know about driving on wet pavement??
Driving on a road covered in oil & water can be like driving on ice. You should reduce your speed, use extra caution, & allow twice the normal following distance. If you skid, avoid using your brakes and steer into the direction you want the front of yor car to go - steer into the skid
How can one recover from Hydroplaning and how to you prevent it?
To recover, keep your wheels straight & reduce your speed.
To prevent:
1. reduce speed & drive slowly on wet roadways
2. have tires inflated to recommend air pressure.
3. be sure to have good tire tread, which helps water escape quickly through the grooves of the tire. All-weather tires are good.
4. steer around water when possible.
5. if you hear a slushing sound from the tires, especially when changing directions, slow down
What should you know about the steering wheel locking device??
Never turn your vehicle's ignition to the "lock" position while it is still in motion. This will cause the steering to lock if you try to turn the steering wheel and you will lose control of your car.
What is the Louisiana law on headlights,
1. Your headlights (not just parking lights) be on b/t sunset and sunrise.
2. You are required by law to use lower headlight beams not your "bright beams" when approaching within 500 ft of or following with 200 ft. of another vehicle.
3. Head lights are required when moisture of the air or precipitation necessitates the use of windshield wipers & when weather conditions are unfavorable.
4. Your headlights must be on when driving in weather conditions that make it difficult for other ppl to see your vehicle clearly from a distance of 500 ft.
What about fog lights?
Some cars have front and/or rear fog lights. A front fog light has a distinct flat, low yet wide beam pattern. A rear fog light is red. A rear fog light can only be used in a dense fog or similar condition & you should switch off the fog lights when the visibility improves.
How can driving at night be safter???
1. keep windshield & windows clean inside & out.
2. lights on car work properly
3. reduce your speed so that you can stop within the distance you can ahead
4. use lower beam when approaching other car so you wont blind them
5. if a stubborn driver refuses to dim the lights, flash your high beams once, look to the right edge of the road as a guide and slow down.
Where do pedestrians have the right of way???
When they are in a marked crosswalk, crossing an intersection with a green traffic signal or walk signal, and over a vehicle make a right turn on red.
What rules should you know about approaching and passing bicyclists???
1. Increase the following distance behind bicyclists.
2. Bicyclist not traveling in the extreme right of the lane my be trying to avoid gravel, debris, etc.
3. be cautious of bicyclists moving legally into the center of the lane b/c of hazords or into the left of the lane b/c of a left turn.
4.avoid passing b/t a bicyclist & an oncoming car on a 2-way road. Slow dwn & allow oncoming cars to pass. Then move to the left to allow plenty of room to pass the bicyclist safely.
5. give bicyclist entire lane when passing parked cars.
6. use extra caution during wet, windy, or icy weather.
When following trucks how big of a gap should you keep between you and the truck?
In good road & weather conditions you should leave a gap of least 3 seconds b/t your vehicle & an even longer gap when conditions are poor.
