Becoming a multiculturally competent mental health practitioner involves three dimension.
1. deals with the prattioners attitudes and belifes about race, culture, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. developing a a positive view towrd multiculturalism, and understanding how one's values and biases may get int he way of effecrive helping.
2. A cultuurally competent praticiones is knowledage and understanidng of his or her own worlview, possesses specific knowledge of the diverse groups with wohom he or she works, and has a basic understaidn of sociopolitical influences.
3. deals with skills, intervention, techniques nad stategies necessary in serving diverse cients groups.
Mental health seveces can be delivered best if practitiones accuraely begin with the assumption that their clients aare basically psychologically healthy and are experiencing normal developmental struggles.
The first step in the process of acquiring multicultural cousneling skills should be that students become involved in a self exploratory clas to help identify their cultural and ethnic blind spots.and a second course dealing exclusively with multicultural issues and minority group.
Multicultural perspective shoul be integrated throughgout the curriculum.
Training: Classes, teachers that are well trained and experienced in multicultural counseling, interships that offer experiences in a multicultural settings, interactions with diverse groups of people who face a myriad of problems.. Well selected intership experiences, trainees will not only expand theri own consciosunes but will also increase their knowledge of diverse groups and will have a biasis for acquiring intervention skills. Reading and traveling, films and videtapes, seminars,workshops that focus on ulticultural issues int eh helping profession. Such range of experiences will snsitize students to a broad range of life experiences and cultural values will contribute to their effeciveness as cousnlors.
While learning the trainnee should be paitient and accept limitiations and expand your vision of how your culture continues to influence the person you are today. Work on becoming a more effective person and cousnelor and remember that this is an ongoing process.
