Battle of Midway

Japanese attempt to take over the westernmost island of Hawaii. The American victory was a turning point in the Pacific War and proved that carriers were the decisive ship in naval warfare.

War Production Board

Directed the conversion of industrial manufacturing to war production. The board boosted the workforce on the homefront to rapidly produce goods and practice frugality.

Tuskegee Airman

A segregated flight school specifically for African Americans training to join the airforce. The school produced hundreds of distinguished men and marked a change in social issues within the military.

A. Phillip Randolph

African Americans rights activist that threatened a march on Washington if racial discrimination was allowed to exist in defense industries. To prevent this, Roosevelt forbid discrimination and established the Fair Employment Practices Committee.

Smith v. Allright

Eliminated Texas' whites only primary, paving the way for greater African American political participation. The case declared that political primaries were subject to the 15th amendment.

Executive Order 9066

President Roosevelt's command to relocate all Japanese Americans to war relocation camps. All families lost their homes and businesses as well as civil liberties.

Teheran Conference

Roosevelt and Churchill's first joint meeting with Stalin. At the meeting they assured China's return of territory, Russia's declaration of war against Japan, the invasion of France, and the creation of postwar organization, the United Nations.

Operation Overlord

General Dwight D Eisenhower's daring cross-channel assault on Hitler's Atlanta Wall. The Allies used the element of surprise on D-day, June 6 1944, to assault the Germans. Although the casualty rate was astronomical, it was a turning point in the war, proving America's power and securing the beach head on the way to take back France.

Leapfrogging (Island Hopping)

A practice in the Pacific War that secured America's victory. The US and Australian forces pushed toward Tokyo, taking one island after another until the US triumphed.

Yalta Conference

The big three leaders, Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin's meeting to discuss the shape of postwar world. They created the United Nations, set occupation status in Germany, and set a boundary lines within Europe.

Manhattan Project

A secretive government funded effort to develop the world's first atomic weapon. Successful creation of an atomic bomb provided a decisive victory when President Truman launched it on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Potsdam Declaration

At this conference, big leaders divided Germany and discussed attack of Japan, including the atomic bomb.
