Disease Control General Instructions
Give instructions before placement of appliances.
OHI--Perform brushing before a mirror so that brush application is accurate & thorough.
Use a disclosing solution rinse to assist in self-evaluation.
Recommend approved fluoride & dentifrices
***Place emphasis on sulcular brushing and cleaning the area between the ortho bands, brackets, & gingiva.
Disease Control Toothbrushing: Brush Selection
Power Brush: soft filaments, light stroke, slow speed
Manual Brush: soft brush rounded filaments, use a bilevel toothbrush with short horizontal strokes.

Sulcular Brushing
Adapt for appliance--Charters' position (occlusal surface to clean under wire & bracket for mandibular arch) & Stillman position for other side.
Clean all surfaces--above, below, over wires
Lingual and Palatal--Similar to basic strokes used on the facial surfaces.

A rubber tip can be helpful in dislodging biofilm under brackets

A description & careful explanation of each step in the procedure for debanding and debonding will alleviate patient apprehension about the process.
Retained excess resin is biofilm retentive & irritates the tissues. REMOVE IT!
