Atom
smallest particle of an element that has the properties of that element. Is the basic building block of matter- elements are made of atoms- atoms of the same element are alike and atoms of different elements are different.
Element
the simplest pure substance- cannot be changed into a simpler substance by heating or by any chemical process. The particles that make up and element are in their simplest form.
Molecule
Made of two or more atoms chemically bonded together. They are the smallest particle of a compound that have properties of that compound. They are what most compounds are made of.
Compound
Pure substances that are made of more than one element; Two or more elements chemically combined. They can be broken down into simpler substances. The properties of the elements that make up a compound are often different from the properties of the compound itself.
Mixture
Matter that consists of two or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined. Each substance that makes up a mixture has its own specific properties and is made the same throughout, but the mixture as a whole is not the same throughout.
Heterogeneous
A mixture that does not appear to be the same throughout- you can easily tell it has more than one substance. The least mixed of mixtures. The particles in it are large enough to be seen and to separate from the mixture.
Homogeneous
A mixture that appears to be the same throughout- one that is well mixed. The particles that make up the mixture are very small and not easily recognizable.
Solutions
A type of homogeneous mixture formed when one substance dissolved in another. The best mixed of all mixtures. Made up of two parts- solute (the one that dissolves) and solvent (the one that does the dissolving).
Solute
The substance that dissolves in another substance- part of solutions.
Solvent
The substance that dissolves the other substance- part of solutions.
Pure substance
When all the particles are alike. Made of only one kind of material and has definite properties. Is the same throughout.
