Explain the two problems with the lymphatic vessels:

Edema- caused by tissue fluid build up not being removed by lymphatic system, can cause tissue damage or even death

Cancer- can travel through vessels and start a new tumor in healthy part of the body

Immunity is..
the body's capability to repel foreign substances, pathogens & cancer cells
how does the immune system keep up healthy?

by fighting infection & cancer

Listed are some cells of the immune system; what do they do?

marcophages, mast cells, neutrophils, NKC, lymphocyctes, B cells, plasma cells, memory cells, t cells, cytotoxic cells, t helper cells

macrophages- eats pathogens, inflammatory response

mast cells- release histamine, inflammatory response

neutrophils- eats pathogens, inflammatory response

NKC- kill virus infected & tumor cells by cell-to-cell contact

lymphocytes-specific immunity

b cells- produce plasma cells and memory cells

plasma cells- produce specific antibodies

memory cells- long life cells, may produce new B + T cells

t cells- regulate immune response, produce cytotoxic T and helper T cells

cytotoxic cells- kill virus infected & cancer cells

t helper cells- regulates immunity

Red bone marrow function & description

lots in children, adults have little

produces blood cells

Thymus function & description

larger in children, shrinks with age, only about 5% of T cells ever leave the thymus, only the "good fighters"

plays role in maturation of T cells

Lymph Nodes function & description

small structures along the lymphatic vessels, swollen when body is fighting something

filter lymph + keep is free of antigens + pathogens

Spleen function & description

large lymphatic organ in upper abdomen, can survive without one, but more susceptible to infections

filters blood

The lymphatic system is made up of _______ and _________.

Lymphatic vessels

Lymphatic organs

Describe the lymphatic vessels

transparent vessels of the lymphatic system that return lymph to the circulatory system

Explain each nonspecific defense in our immune system -barriers to entry

-inflammatory response

-complement system (C)

natural killer cell (NKC)

barriers to entry: skin, mucous membranes, hair & cilia

inflammatory response: 4 signs-redness, heat, swelling and pain

complement system: made of a # of blood plasma proteins, works like a "domino effect"

natural killer cell: kill cells that are not recognized as "self" use same methods as T cells to kill cells

explain specific defenses & adaptive immunity

-respond to antigens (pathogen, foreign cell, cancer cell)

-we become immune when our body learns to destroy a particular antigen

-distinguishes "self" from "non-self"

-we have lymphocytes for any possible type of antigen

explain active and passive immunity

active- promoted by immunization, depends on the presence of memory cells, ex flu shot

passive- prepared antibodies not produced by the individual, temporary- no memory cells, only last a few months, newborns receive antibodies from breastfeeding

Define: cytotoxic t cells

responsible for response to virus infected & cancer cells
define: allergies

hypersensitivities to substances

define: autoimmune diseases

disease that results when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues
list 4 ways to be sure you do not become infected with HIV (AIDS)

- don't do drugs, definitely don't inject them

and unless you know a person is clean

-avoid anal-rectal intercourse

-avoid oral sex

-don't have unprotected sex (always wear a condom)
