Napoleon III

• Emperor of Fr 1861-1867


• Civil War=> Napoleon III wanted to create influence in Mexico/ a trade system


• taking advantage of US'/Union preocc w/ civil war, dispatched a French army to occupy
Mexico City in 1861. installed Austrian archduke Maximilian as emperor of Mexico in puppet gov't.


• US' condemned but couldnt do anything b/c busy & Lincoln didnt want France supporting the Confed in the war


• After War ended, US turned their attention to Mexico & forced Napoleon to withdraw forces/dream of building influence in Mexico


• One instance where Europe violated Monroe Doctrine.


* Shows that Europe still had interest in Lat. America/ creating a trade system despite the Monroe Doctrine and Est USA-Mexico relations

Clara Barton

• Nurse in US Civil War 1861-1865


• founder of the Red Cross


• She trained soldiers how to care for the wounded and ill during trip to Battle of Antietam


• served as nurse for the union


Numerous Union soldiers cared and treated throughout the Civil War American Red Cross created.


* help keep Union army strength from decreasing drastically by aiding soldiers and training others how to do first aid. She was one of the main creators of the American Red Cross. Helped transform nursing into respected profession- opened employment for women post war.

Morrill Tariff Act

• 1861


Most of South=seceded the Union by 1861


• Congress=> M. Tariff Act raising the taxes on shipping 5 to 10%


• To raise revenue and protect northern manufacturers/ encourage production


• Intended to raise the rates back to what it was in the Tariff of 1846 and also to counteract the Tariff of 1857 (reduced the rates)


* The industry growth that came from this tariff was crucial for the North’s econ during Civil War, by keeping it stable stable.

National Banking Act

• Banks, US (North), 1863


• Union intended to create a nat'l banking system and standard bank currency


• Congress passed act so Union wouldnt be engulfed in a financial crisis if war


• Nat'l banks could purchase gov't bonds, then issue their own money


• Created a nat'l banking system (1st Since Jackson destroyed the 2BoUS) as well as a standard bank currency


* major step towards creating a nationwide banking system. Help create some economic stability by regulating the quantity of money in the econ/circulation. Prevented North from having an econ crisis in a critical time (War)


Trent Affair

• USA, Britain, 1861


• Union warship captured British warship, Trent, along w/ 2 diplomats from the Confed


• Britain= furious.many Brits wanted war against Union


• Britain demand the release the two Confed diplomats and an apology from Union


• Lincoln didnt want war w/ Britain b/c already @ a civil war & reluctantly released diplomats to Britain


* This incident demonstrates that there was still relations b/t the Confed/Europe and the Confederacy’s need for foreign intervention in the Civil War

Alabama

• Britain, Confed Britain, oceans 1862-1864


• captured 60+ ships throughout Northern Atlantic, angering Union


• ship actually manned by the British and also has never docked in the Confederate States


* antagonized relations b/t the Union and Britain. Displayed the foreign intervention in the war. The constructing of the vessel = Confed had support from Britain. If it wasn’t for the opposition from the Union, Britain may have been allies with the South altering the course of the Civil War

Draft Riots

• NYC, 1863


• Volunteers for the Union during the Civil War but now the gov't called for military draftees


• any middle-aged men were required to join the military and serve but you can pay $300 and skip the military draft


• Federal troops entered the city to suppress the riots that occurred b/c this


* Shows the growing rift between the wealthy class and the poorer, working class/immigrants. It also shows the discontent some of America felt about the war. Not everyone in the north supported the Civil War, only moderate/radical abolitionists
