What are electromagnetic waves?
A form of energy that can travel through space.
What is radiation?
Direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves.
What is visible light?
Light that we can see it contains the different colors of the rainbow.
What is infrared radiation?
Wavelengths that we can not see but we can feel as heat.
What is ultraviolet radiation?
Shorter wave lengths than the color violet. This radiation is what gives us a sunburn and can cause skin cancer.
What is the greenhouse effect?
Infrared radiation is trapped by carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane. This creates a blanket around the Earth creating temperatures on Earth to rise.
What is thermal energy?
The total energy of motion in the molecules of a substance.
What is wind?
The horizontal -------> movement of air from an area of high pressure to and area of low pressure.
What is an anemometer?
A instrument that is used to measure wind speed.
What is the wind-chill factor?
What the temperature feels like when the wind is blowing over your skin.
What are local winds?
Winds that blow over a short distance.
What is a sea breeze?
Winds that blow in from over an ocean to land.
What is a land breeze?
Winds that blow from land over a body of water.
What are global winds?
Winds that blow steadily without much change in a specific direction over long distances.
What is evaporation?
Water molecules in liquid water that escape in to the air as water vapor (gas)
What is humidity?
It is the measure of the amount of water vapor in the air.
What is relative humidity?
The percentage of water vapor in the air compared to the maximum amount the air can hold.
What is a psychrometer?
An instrument that measures relative humidity.
What is condensation?
Molecules of water vapor in the air become liquid water.
What is the dew point?
The temperature at which condensation begins.
What is precipitation?
Any form of water that falls from clouds and reach's Earth's surface.
What are the 5 most common types of precipitation?
Rain, Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain, and Hail.
