Indulgence & Martin Luther

Indulgence is a relaxation of earthly penalty for sin. Martin Luther was a church reformer who came up with new reform movement.

Protestant & Reformation

Protestant became the name for Christians who broke with the Catholic Church during and after the 16th century. Protestants used the term Reformation to describe the movement of opposition to the Catholic Church.

John Calvin & Predestination

John Calvin was a French reformer. Calvin argued that Christians could do nothing to earn salvation even before they were born. This idea is called predestination.

St. Ignatius of Loyola & Jesuit

One of the most important new religious orders was the Society of Jesus. The spaniard Ignatius of Loyola formed the Jesuits in the early 1530s.

Missionary & convert

A person who goes on missions is called a missionary. Sometimes religious groups organize missions to persuade people who don't share their faith to convert to, or adopt, their religion.

Priests weren't taxed so people wanted to be priests. So, some priests weren't sincere and didn't know much about the bible.

How did the ideas of reformers John Wycliffe and Desiderius Erasmus differ?

John Wycliffe has the fundamental belief that the church should be poor. Erasmus held to doctrines such as that of free will.

Why did William Tyndale translate the Bible into English?

He believed that the ordinary Christian should have the chance to read it himself, even if he knew no Latin.

How might the Jesuits' focus on education have contributed to the Counter Reformation?

Because of the Jesuits education, the society could believe them more. Their education was based on a balamce of faith and reason. The Jesuits studied languages so they could spread Catholicism across, Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

Catholic: France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Austria, Hungary, Croatia.
