Polyphony: Is the combination of two or more simultaneous melodic lines

Emergence: The end of the romanesque era, (850-1150)

Organum: The earliest form of polyphonic music, grew out of the custom of adding a second voice to a gregorian melody(chant). Composers of organuum based their pieces on preexisting gregorian chants(cantus firmus)

Motet- The most important of early polyphonic music, medieval composers based their works off of what was handed down in the past, a composer selected a fragment of a Gregorian chant and added to it. Cantus Firmus
