Anatomy
The study of the structure of body parts. (size shape and look)
Physiology
The study of the function of body parts. (muscle contraction)
Relationship between Structure and Function
Function depends on the Structure, they compliment each other. Ex: RBC shape allows them to carry O2 all over the body. They are small enough to get into the smallest cappilaries.
Structural Organization (6 levels)
1. Chemical
2. Cellular
3. Tissue
4. Organ
5. Organ System
6. Organism
Chemical Structure
Atoms combine to form molecules to make up the Human Body
Cellular Structure
Cells are made up of molecules
Cell (the definition)
The smallest particle of Life
Tissue
A group of similar cells that have a common function
Organ
Made up of Tissue / this is a structure that is made up of 2 or more tissue types
Organ System
Group of Organs working together for a common purpose.
Organism
The sum total of all simpler levels - the entire person
4 Types of Tissue
1. Epithelial
2. Connective
3.Muslce
4. Nervous
Epithelial Tissue
Functions: Covers, Lines, Glandular

Ex: epidermis of the Skin, Lining of the oral cavity, Sweat Glands
Connective Tissue
Function: Binds, Supports and protects

Ex: Bone, cartilage, fat, ligaments, blood
Muslce Tissue
Function: Movement

Ex: Cardiac, Smooth, Skeletal
Nervous Tissue
Function: Transmits electrical signal

Ex: Brain, Spinal Cord
Why is the stomach classified as an organ?
Because it has 2 or more tissue types. There are Smooth, Skeltal and connective
11 Body Systems
1. Integumentary
2. Skeletal
3. Muscular
4. Nervous
5. Endocrine
6. Cardiovascular
7. Lymphatic / Immune
8. Respiratory
9. Digestibe
10. Urinary
11. Reproductive
