: The economy in the 1920’s, though prosperous, relied heavily on rampant speculation and stock exchange to have a long lasting existence; the bubble was bound to burst. However, this was not noticed until it too late, since the economic boom times made Americans become too preoccupied with their riches than to notice a problem was building up right before them. |

. In what ways did the Washington Conference, Kellogg-Briand Pact, and the Stimson doctrine fall short of ensuring American national security? |
Washington Conference- This “disarmament conference” invited all major powers-except for communist Russia- to discuss peace. Although the conference succeeded in reducing the number of large battleships, no restrictions were placed on small warships, destroyers, or submarines(724). At best, only a small fragment of the bigger problem was addressed.Kellogg-Briand Pact- Arguably the stupidest of these three diplomatic disappointments, this pact attempted to make all sorts of war illegal- except for defensive wars. Given how defensive wars can be justified by any arbitrary excuse, this pact was weak and useless, and was a reflection of America’s delusion of security and success.Stimson doctrine- This 1932 doctrine was created in response to Japan seizing Manchuria and shutting the Open Door in China, and it stated that the US wouldn't recognize any of Japan’s new territorial acquisitions. This was just a slap on the wrists, and did nothing to stop the Japanese(739). Where was Roosevelt right now? |

The Harding administration was scandal-ridden largely because of President Harding’s ineptitude for detecting corruption among his cabinet, notably one Secretary of the interior Albert Fall. The scandals that occurred under Harding, particularly the Teapot Dome scandal, revealed how corrupt the Washington government was, and it disgraced the Republican party in a manner not seen since the days of President Grant. |
