Fascism

-A system of government characterized by strict social and economic control and a strong, centralized government usually headed by a dictator. First found in Italy by Mussolini.


-Adolf Hitler used fascism to create this type of government based on totalitarian ideas and was used to unite Germany during the 1930s.

Munich Conference

-European diplomatic conference in 1938 where Britain and France conceded to Hitler's demands for Czechoslovakia


-During the Munich Conference of 1938, Britain and France met with Hitler, allowing him to take over Czechoslovakia as long as he agreed to expand no further.

War Powers Act & Revenue Act

-Act in 1941 that gave the president the right to reshuffle government agencies and to a lot materials and facilities as needed for defense, with penalties for those who failed to comply


-raised corporation taxes and required nearly all Americans to pay income taxes.

Lend Lease

-On 11th March 1941, Congress passed the Lend-Lease Act. The legislation gave President Franklin D. Roosevelt the powers to sell, transfer, exchange, lend equipment to any country to help it defend itself against the Axis powers.


-A sum of $50 billion was appropriated by Congress for Lend-Lease. The money went to 38 different countries with Britain receiving over $31 billion. Over the next few years the British government repaid $650 million of this sum.

-S.S. St. Louis set sail from Hamburg carrying German Jews who wished to escape the Nazi regime in Germany to Cuba, then the US, then Canada, all of whom denied them entry. Finally they had to sail back to Germany where many of the Jewish passengers were then put into concentration camps

Serviceman’s Readjustment Act

-The G. I. Bill of Rights or Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 provided for college or vocational education for returning World War II veterans (commonly referred to as GIs or G. I.s) as well as one-year of unemployment compensation.


-It also provided loans for returning veterans to buy homes and start businesses.
