1896 Spain sent armyto Cuba to stop their rebellion & restore order.
Leader of army: General Valeriano Weyler
Weyler captured 300,000 Cuban farmers (Men,Women and Children) And sent them to Concentration Camps. Most died of Disease and Starvation.
This story was on the U.S Newspaper, (Remember Joseph Pullitzer and William R. Hearst?!)

1. DeLome Letter in NY Journal (William Hearst's newspaper).
The DeLome letter was written by the Spanish Diplomat Enrique DeLome.
The paper criticized President McKinley, calling him SOFT AND WEAK.
What was the Americans reaction to DeLome's Letter?
2. The USS. Battleship named Maine.
Maine was sent to Cuba to protect American Citizens and businesses. Out of know where thw ship BLOWS UP!. No one knows why. But in the newspaper, who did they blame it on?
And after hearing this in the Newspaper the Americans wanted to go to War with Spain. Phrase: "Remember the Maine" |
