What is the Central Executive? |
The system of processes responsible for organisation & coordination of the cognitive system to fulfill current goals.
Central Executive monitors and coordinates the work of the slave systems (Phonological loop & Visual-spatial sketchpad), relating it [their work] to the Long-term memory. |
Give examples of activities in which the Central Executive is engaged. |
Problem-solving, multitasking, reading. |
Where approx. is the Central Executive located in the brain? |
Prefrontal cortex. > lesions to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex result in decreased performance on various complex cognitive tasks. |
Which processes comprise the Central Executive? |
1. Inhibition 2. Shifting 3. Updating (Miyake et al., 2000) |
What does Inhibition entail? |
It is the ability to deliberately halt or stop automatic, dominant, prepotent responses when required. |
Example of inhibition? |
Stroop task |
What is Shifting? |
The ability to flexibly switch between multiple tasks/operations/mental sets. |
What does the Updating process entail? |
# keeping track of Working memory operations,
# revising info that needs to be remembered. |
In which part of the brain is Inhibition found? |
*Right intraparietal sulcus*
It is activated when there is selective attention to relevant stimuli and suppression of irrelevant info. |
Image of the right hemisphere. Parietal lobe is in light blue. |
Where is the Shifting process located within the brain? |
*Left superior parietal sulcus* It is involved in switching and integration. |
Where is the Updating function located in the brain? |
*Lateral prefrontal cortex*
It is involved in monitoring and updating. |
Are the processes comprising the Central Executive of a unified or diverse nature? |
This is debatable. Each of the processes has 2 parts: 1) a unique function; 2) sth common between all three processes. Complex tasks require the use of more than one executive process.>> Likely to be some overlap in these processes. |
