Prokaryotic cell

Small cells without a nucleus, no membrane-bound organelles and are unicellular
Eukaryotic cell
A cell that has a “true nucleus” and contains membrane-bound organelles and can be part of a multi-cellular organism

Uni-cellular

A term that describes organisms like bacteria and some protists that are made of a single cell

Multi-cellular
A term that describes organisms made of many cells
Nucleus
A large structure in the cell that contains the genetic material and controls the cell’s activities
Chromatin
Granular material spread throughout the nucleus and made of RNA
Chloroplast
An organelle that can take energy from the sun to make energy rich food molecules
Flagella/cilia
Whip-like and hair-like structures that aid in movement of some cells
Chromosome
Thread-like structures of condensed chromatin that form when a cell is ready to divide. They contain DNA
Nuclear membrane
An organelle dotted with tiny pores that regulates materials that can enter and leave the nucleus
Cell membrane
A thin flexible barrier that surrounds the cell’s contents and regulates what goes in and out of a cell so that it maintains homeostasis
Cell wall
A rigid structure on the outside of the membrane that protects and supports a cell
Cytoplasm
The liquid part of a cell that bathes them in nutrients and provides a medium to support them
Organelle
Little compartmental organ in the cell with a specific duty
Vacuole
An organelle that temporarily stores needed materials like food and water. They also give support to plants
Ribosome
Small structures made up of RNA and proteins that are responsible for making proteins
Nucleolus
A dense location in the nucleus where ribosomes are assembled
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
An organelle where parts of the cell membrane (lipids) are made and where some proteins are chemically modified
Golgi apparatus
An organelle that packages and stores proteins for transport out of the cell
Lysosome
A small organelle containing digestive enzymes that break down food particles and recycle cell parts that are no longer needed
Vesicle
An organelle that isolates specific molecules and transports them from the Golgi to the cell membrane
Mitochondria

An organelle responsible for releasing energy from stored food molecules to power all cell functions
