Plasma membrane

Membrane that separates the inside of the cell from the outside.

Phospholipid Bilayer

The plasma membrane is made up of two layers of phospholipids that are tail to tail. Phospholipids are fats.

Cytoplasm

The inside of a cell

extracellular space

space outside and in between each cell

membrane protein

Protein embedded inside the membrane

Channel protein

Protein that runs all the way through the plasma membrane. Use for passive transport inside and outside of cell.

Carrier protein

Protein that runs all the way through the plasma membrane. Allows specific molecules or ions to cross membrane

Receptor protein

Protein in the plasma membrane that is shaped in a specific way so that a molecule or signal can bind to it.

hydrophobic

parts of the plasma membrane or phospholipid that do not interact with water

hydrophilic

parts of the plasma membrane or phospholipid that interact with water

cholesterol

fatty structures within membrane that allow it to move fluidly

semipermeable

a membrane or structure that allows some (but not all) molecules or ions to pass through
