access control list (ACL)

A means of controlling access to a given resource. For example, if user Sean can do anything he likes with the file passwords.txt, thent he ACL associated with the file contains an entry something like Sean, all. The ACLs used with different systems usually have similar formats.

access point (AP)

A wireless devise that typically connects to the wired network directly and allows wireless clients to attach to it.

Active Directory (AD)

A network administration management console available exclusively in Microsoft's Windows Server line since Windows 2000. The tool allows for the centralized administration of a network to include users, groups, computers, and other resources. Additionally, it allows for authentication services using Kerberos.

Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)

A protocol used to resolve the owner of a given MAC address when given a specific IP address. The companion to ARP is Reverse Address Resolution Protocol (RARP).

anonymizer

A service used to obscure activities of a user or client on the internet. If implemented and used correctly, it can make it substantially difficult to trace the user of the service.
