What should I do at the end of a trip or work day?

Do an after trip/work inspection on every operated vehicle that day.

What tire problems should you look for?

-Too much or too little air pressure


-Tread separation


-Tire wear. 4/32 front tire 2/32 back tire tread depth


-Cuts or other damage



-Mismatched sizes


-Radial and bias-ply tires used together


-Dual tires coming in contact with each other or other vehicle parts



-Cut or cracked valve stems



*Regrooved, recapped, or retreaded tires on front of bus are prohibited


Wheel and Rim problems?

-Damaged rims


-Rust around wheel nuts could=loose (if tires changed, stop a short while to re-check tightness of nuts)


-Missing clamps, spacers, studs, or lugs=DANGER


-Mismatched, bent, or cracked lock rings=DANGER


-Rims with welding repairs are unsafe

Bad Brake drums and shoes?

-Cracked drums


-Shoes or pads w/ oil, grease, or brake fluid on them


-Shoes worn dangerously thin, missing, or broken

Steering System Defects

-Missing nuts, bolts, cotter keys, or other parts


-Bent, loose, or broken parts such as Steering column, steering gear box, or tie rods


-Steering wheel play of more than 10° (2in of play on 20in steering wheel)



*If power steering equipped check hoses, pumps, and fluid level; check for leaks

Suspension System Defects?

-SPRING HANGERS that allow movement of axle from proper position


-Cracked or broken SPRING HANGERS


Missing or broken LEAVES


-Leaking SHOCK ABSORBERS


-TORQUE ROD or arm, U-BOLTS, or other AXLE POSITIONING PARTS that are cracked, damaged, or missing


-Damage and/or leaks in air Suspension Systems


-Any loose, cracked, missing FRAME MEMBERS

Order of 7 step inspection method

1. Read vehicle inspection list


2. Check engine compartment


3. Start engine and inspect inside cab


4. Turn off engine and check lights


5. Do walk around inspection


6. Check signal lights


7. Start the engine and check (Hydrologic leaks)
