slavery
slavery has existed since pre historic times but by the tie the US constitution was adopted in 1789 the northern states had abolished it and only the southern states permitted it due to economic reason

Maine entered as a free state and Missouri as a slave state in order to keep the balance of powering the senate even (12 free and 12 slave states) southern boundary of missouri was used as a compromise line for cuter territories entering as free of slave states

passed by Stephen Douglass in order to build a transcontinental railroad. created two new territories - KS and KE each was given the right to decide the issue of slavery through popular sovereignty (Missouri compromise?) led to conflict and bloodshed in Kansas between free soldiers (like john brown) and pro slavery groups

Suprene court case about a slave who sued for freedom because his owner had taken him to a free state. case dismissed because the court ruled slaves were not citizens and could not file law suits also ruled that congress could not stop slavery in the territories

newly formed republican party chose abraham Lincoln. Northern and southern democrats had two candidates and split their votes whigs nominated a fourth candidate. Lincoln got only 40% of the popular vote but 60% of the electoral college vote
