Ground Row

Profile board or other material cut out in an appropriate shape and used as a scenic piece (except as a masking for strip lights).

Stiffener

Usually a 1” x 3” batten placed at a right angle on a flat or piece of scenery to increase stiffness.

What are the two most common bracing devices?

Jacks & Stage Braces

Jack

A triangle brace hinged to a flat for support.

Stage Braces

Adjustable sticks with a hook at the top and a foot at the bottom. The Hook is attached to a brace cleat on the flat and the foot is attached to the floor with a stage screw. The brace is then adjusted so that the flat is vertical.

Stage Screw

Traditional screw. A cast iron screw with a course, tapered thread.

Penny Nail

Refers to the weight of the nail (a 2-penny nail weighs about the same as two pennies.) It also refers to the length of the nail. After a 6-penny (6” D”) it equals apx. 2”.

Common Nail

For general construction with a fairly heavy shaft and a reasonably large head.

Box Nail

Thinner Nail with a slightly smaller head.

Sinker or Coated Nail

Box nail coated with rosin-based glue.

Finishing Nail or Casing Nail

Has smaller, slightly different head for finishing work.

Duplex Nail (Scaffolding Nail or Hollywood)

It is like a common Nail, but it has one head on top of another.

Staples

Come in lightweight wire, for lightweight materials like fabric, or heavier gauge of wood, like plywood.

Bolts

Bolts are used when screws don’t provide a secure enough hold.

Trestles

These are built like stud walls of a house, with the top and bottom plates and vertical “stud” legs on two to four foot centers.

Rake

To place a set piece, piece of furniture, or stage at an acute angle.

Box Set

A set that wraps around a playing area on three sides (using corner joints) 90 degrees - 45 degrees use nails or screws, flats use hinges.

Toe Nail

Something that has been temporarily nailed to hold down scenery.

Trammel

An adjustable clamp used to make a large circle.

Holds Down Scenery
