Condyle


Knuckle.


A large rounded articulation process usually found at the distal end of a long bone and covered with hyaline cartilage.

Greek: kondylos ( knuckle)


Cotyloid

Cup- shaped/cup-like.


A cavity or deep articulation depression such as the acetabulum.


Same as acetabulum

Crest

Prominent border or ridge.

Epicondyle

A bony prominence above or on a condyle.

Facet

Small face.


A smooth flat surface that is concave or convex and is usually covered with hyaline cartilage

Hole.


Opening through which blood vessels, nerves or ligaments pass.

Fossa

Cavity.

A projection/outgrowth from a larger structure, usually a bone.

Prominence

A projection/ protuberance of a bone.

Spine

Thorn.


A sharp slender process.

Trochanter

Runner.


Projections found only on the femur. ( greater & lesser trochanter)

Tubercle

Small.


Small, rounded usually roughened processes.

Tuberosity

Large.


Large, rounded usually roughened processes.

Ramus

Branch.


A part of an irregular shapes bone, less slender than a process that forms an angle with the main part of the bone.



Eg. Jaw to the skull

Line

Ridge.


On a bone not as prominent as a ridge.

Fissure

Crack


A narrow opening between two bones.
