Define Blocks and their characteristics

Blocks reserve time on a provider's schedule for certain visit types or types of patients. Blocks can be visual indicators on a provider's schedule that let schedulers know that a time slot or multiple time slots should be used for a visit type or type of patient. Blocks can also be restrictive and force schedulers to put certain visit types or types of patients at certain times.

Define Visit Type Blocks

Look to the: visit type being scheduled




Used to: specify where on the schedule those visit types should be scheduled




EX: Physical block indicates 'schedule physicals here'

Define Patient Level Blocks

Look to the: patient's ADT status, patient type, or some custom category.




Used to: Keep the wrong type of patient from being scheduled.




EX: Inpatient block looks to the patient's ADT status; keeps outpatients from being scheduled.

What are the required steps to creating a block?

1. Add block to block category list (SER 60)


2. Release the block - make it available to be used:


- Department level


- Provider level


Additional Step: can link block to a visit type to restrict scheduling VT to that block.

Why would you want to time release blocks?

If a block isn't used in a certain time period, you can choose to have the block change to another block or remove the block from the slot. This will allow for efficient scheduling.

Define Block Scheduling Restrictions

Block scheduling restrictions allow you to specify parameters for when you can schedule into blocks.




Can be set up at provider or department level




Block scheduling only allows scheduling something other than a block if a user has overrule security
