West coast of U.S. looked like Bahamas during the ___ era.

Paleozoic

Lots of lateral faulting, basins opening/closing,SAF system appears and dominates someaspects of CA fortune. What era?

Cenozoic;

In front of Sierra Nevada is the forearc basin. Pay attetion to the bay area. ___ good for burying bodies because it has deep submarine canyon.

Monterrey Bay;

700 meters sticks out from all of the valley. It is a remnant volcano.

Sutter Buttes;

The plate tectonics is a system operating all around the globe everyday. Extension sea floor spreading rifting all going on. There are divergent boundaries active in the pacific. Pacific basin known as the ___ subduction zone. Between trench & volcanic arc is the ___.

Ring of Fire;

Forearc basin;

The Great Valley sequence is all about what?

The forearc basin

synonymous with OCEAN, as in a largebody of salt water that is tide affected and typicalof what we find in modern oceans. Has to have tides.

Marine

Big ocean. Bakersfield used to be over a very deep marineenvironment.

Subduction began & the western margin of the North American continent essentially overrode everything. Like proverbial bus. Lots of geology ended up sliding under the bus.

Volcanoes to the east shed debris into the basin forming a sedimentary pile.

Igneous plutons exhumed & shedded debris into the basin forming a sedimentary pile. Basin filling with sediments.

Bathymetric high being created to the west of us as the subduction complex grows. Accreted terrains get stuck there. The high eventually became emergent.

Basin fills over time & then shallowed over time.

Big Transform fault (SAF) with right lateral motion slides into the area & complicates everything.

Basin seals off & we lost the primarily marine environment & relatively recent deposits are characteristic of brackish to fresh water environments with sediments sloughing off of the Sierras & the coast ranges as they slide into the area & slide by .

Basement on Bottom (we are not floating in air).

Marine Sediments on the bottom of the sedimentary pile is a big issue for oilcompanies. Can make lots of money if you know system.

Fresh water environments & sediments above the marine sediments & nice soilsfor the Ag industry.

LOTS of water was in the basin for a long time.

Enclosed drainage & topography creates ___ problems & air-quality problems.

LOTS of people moving into the basin.

salinity;

SAF is part of planetary system. Is not going away. Longer we wait, the worst it gets. Builds up a lot of potential energy. SAF brings mountains with it that close off the central valley. Which Valley fills up first? Sacramento or San Joaquin?

Sacramento Valley;

Marine sediments on __ pile are full of salt water & oil.

bottom;

We are losing ag land to what? Unbelievable fertile lands back then. Lots of wetlands. Lots of river systems from Sierra Nevada that dump in Central Valley. River kept dumping. Marine sediments would be on the top? No. Bottom.

Salt

You have NEVER had pure water in your life. Closest you can get is Silica Valley ___ water. All water you've experienced has salt.

Ultra pure water;

Great ValleyGeomorphologyStill evolving but the __ changeeverything.For a while .

dams;

In Central Valley there is a big clay section that isolates upper from lower. This ___ protects groundwater from contamination.

Corcoran clay;

The SAF closing the San Joaquin & Sacramento Delta embayment basin. Bakersfield used to be a ___.

beach

Near North end of central valley big volcanic feature. Castellated core. Like a castle. High silica volcano. Then became andesitic. Don't think it exploded. 1.6 million years ago. pretty recent.

Sutter Buttes

Great Valley Agriculture is huge in the nation. Drought monitor graph is bad. __ is building up in the valley soils & forcing Ag toremove acreage from production. What happened?

Salt;

The natural flushing & drainage system has been shut off.

__ is the gateway to CA's drainage system. It's under sea level. Lots of farms. Almost all of which are below sea level. Lots of senior rights holders. Lots of salt-intrusion issues. Fish have chemical contamination.

Delta

In the natural system, Mother natures rivers would flush out where? (Rivers drain the Central Valley through where?) But not anymore.

The Golden Gate in SF Bay Delta.

ENCLOSED __ CREATES CHALLENGES: Air pollution trapped. Internal drainage accumulates: __ & ___.

basin;

salt & chemicals

Subsurface drainage removes saline water, lower water table. Without drains, salt continues to accumulate.

ok

Summary: Quiescent Paleozoic.

Huge change in Mesozoic.

Fore arc Basin caused by Subduction.

San Andreas Ridge-Ridge TRANSFORM Fault (SAF) is made & complicates everything.

Basins opening/closing by lateral faults in Cenozoic (SAF).

Multiple complexities & explanations for the exotic terrains raftedinto California.

BIG AG: Water supply & quality challenges.

BIG OIL: Big economy & population. Lots of people & growing.
