Front (Term)

Name two applications of heat?

Back (Definition)

1. Direct heat

-radiant heat is direct heat

- such as electric heater or fireplace

2. Indirect Heat

- is heat from a forced air system or hot water heating

-fuel is used to heat the air or water

What are different types of Solid Fuel?

1. COAL

- is subject to spontaneous combustion (except anthracite)

To avoid this:

1. Kept in cool area

2. The storage area should be free of debris(rags/wood etc)

3. Do not add Wet coal to dry coal

-stored outdoors

- 50 to 100 ft away from other exposures

- stored indoors

- 2 hr fire rated vault

- moderate amounts

- ashes kept in metal container with tight lid

2. WOOD

- should be stored in dry place for 1 year before using

- wood should be stacked so both ends are exposed

- green or wet wood produces creosote

-creosote sticks to flue liner and makes an extremely hot fire

Stored outdoors - 50 to 100 feet

Indoor

- not stored in open

- in cut off room

- no more than 1 day supply

- remove ashes

3. Wood pellets

- made from compacted sawdust

- due to combustibility it's recommended that it stored away from a heat source

- Wood pellets do not create as much creosote as wood

What is fuel storage capacity of above ground tanks vs underground tanks ?

Aboveground

- have a maximum individual capacity of 2500 L

- combined aggregate capacity (two tanks) is 5000 L

Underground tanks

- are over 2500 L capacity

Oil tanks installed INDOORS:

- tanks shall be installed or removes as one unit

- tanks installed in in lowest storey or basement...

1. THE CAPACITY should not exceed 2500 L for any ONE TANK

2. The total capacity of TANK( S) should not exceed 5000L

- for any tank that burn USED OIL, the minimum size shall be 910L

- temperature of oil in tank should not exceed 38 C

-distance of any oil fired appliance should be at least 2 ft from tank

- tank installation must be at least 1 m of working space from electrical panel (must not interfere)

- must have 1 hr fire resistance rating

Out door oil tanks - (underground/buried)

....identify five installation requirements

- should be double-walled construction

-3feet below ground level that is subject to vehicle traffic

- 3 feet from a building foundation or street line

-5 feet from property line

- 24 inches from adjacent underground tanks

- should be inspected before installing

Outside (above ground) tanks

Identify installation requirements

- 1 hour fire resistance rating

- 1 tank max capacity 2500L

- max 2 tanks with total capacity of 5000 L

Installation requirements:

- protected from physical damage

- located at least 5 feet from the property line

- temperature of the oil in the tank shall not exceed 38°C
