Chemical bonds

Atoms sharing or transfer valence electrons

Colvalent bond

Sharing of a pair of valence electrons by two atoms

Molecule

Two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds

Single bond

A pair of shared electrons

Double bond

Sharing two pairs of valence electrons

Atom's Valence

Bonding capacity. Usually equal to the number of unpaired electrons required to complete atoms valence shell.

Electronegativity

Attraction of a particular atom for the electrons of a covalent bond

Nonpolar covalent bond

Covalent bond two atoms of the same element. Electrons shared have the same electronegativity.

Polar covalent bond

When an atom is bonded to a more electronegative atom, the electrons of the bond are not shared equally

Ions

Two opposite charged atoms or molecules

Cation

Positivley charged ion (cats are positive, meow)

Anion

Negatively charged ion

Ionic bond

Any two ions of opposite charge can can form this bond. No electron transfer charge required
