Mesencephalon

Midbrain. Receives sensory and motor information from rest of body, and associated with involuntary reflex responses via visual or auditory stimuli.

Colliculi

Nuclei in midbrain. Superior colliculus receives visual sensory input, while the inferior colliculus recives auditory sensory input.

Prosencephalon

Forebrain. Associated with complex perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral processes. Divides into telencephalon (cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, limbic system) and diencephalon (thalamus, hypothalamus, posterior pituitary gland, and pineal gland).

Lateral Hypothalamus

"Hunger Center". Detects when body needs food or fluids.

Ventromedial Hypothalamus

"Satiety Center" Provides signals to stop eating.

Anterior Hypothalamus

Controls sexual behavior.

Extrapyramidal Motor System

Gathers information about body position and carries it to CNS. Includes basal ganglia, spinal cord, brain.

Limbic System

Group of structures associated with emotion and memory. Includes fornix, thalamus, septal nuclei, amygdala, hippocampus, corpus callosum.

Septal Nuclei

Primary pleasure center of brain.

Amygdala

Defensive and aggressive behaviors.

Bumps and folds in cerebral cortex.
