Body image

primary determinants of body appearance

skeleton, muscle, and fat

Somatotype

A quantitative description of the present structure and composition of the body

Who developed the somatotype physique classification? When?

W.H. Sheldon

1920s - 1950s

Sheldon's three primary somatotype components

1. Endomorphy: relative predominance of soft roundness throughout the body

2. Mesomorphy: relative predominance of muscle, bone, and connective tissue

3. Ectomorphy: relative predominance of linearity and fragility

What did Sheldon's study find about the difference between males and females?

Females are more endomorphic and less mesomorphic than males

What are the two most widely used methods of determining somatotypes?

Sheldon method and Heath-Carter method

Heath-Carter method

- extensively used on samples of athletes

- rating scale was opened at the top end, from 7 to 12, to accommodate extreme body types

What does the somatotype not tell you?

A person's height, or body proportionality (trunk length vs. leg length)

What are important factors in determining differences in somatotype components?

genes and environment

Physiognomy

- "physis": nature; "gnomon": judge or interpreter

A theory based upon the idea that the assessment of the person's outer appearance, primarily the face, may give insights into one's character or personality.
