Superior

Term refering to structure being closer to the head or HIGHER then another structure of the body

EX. Shoulders are SUPERIOR to the knee

Anterior

Term refering to a structure being more in FRONT than another structure in the body

EX. Breastbone is ANTERIOR to the spine

Posterior

Term refer to a structure being more in the back than another structure in the body

EX. The spine is POSTERIOR to the breastbone

Medial

Term refers to a structure that is closer to the midline plane of the body

Lateral

Term refers to a structure that is father away from the midline

Proximal

Referencing limbs only! Term used for structure being closer to the point of origin (torso)

EX. The knee is PROXIMAL to the ankle

Distal

Referencing limbs only! Term used for body structure farther away from point of origin (torso)

EX. The elbow is DISTAL to the shoulder

Inferior

Term used for lower part of the body

EX. Feet are INFERIOR to my shoulders

Superficial

On the surface of shallow

EX. The skin is SUPERFICIAL to the muscle

Ipsilateral

On the same side as the body

EX. The left arm is IPSILATERAL to the left leg

Contralateral

Opposite side of the body

EX. The left are is CONTRALATERAL to the right arm

Sagittal Plane

Divides body into left and right pieces

Coronal Plane

Divides the body from front and back

Transverse Plane

Divides body into top and bottom pieces

Sagittal Axis

Intersection formed at the Sagittal and Traverse planes

Frontal Axis

Intersection at Frontal and Traverse planes

Vertical Axis

Intersection formed at Sagittal and Frontal planes
