Dorsal, Posterior

Toward or at the back of the body

Lateral

Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side of

Medial

Towards or at the midline of the body; on the inner side

Distal

Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk

The knee is distal to the thigh

Proximal

Closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk

The elbow is proximal to the wrist

Anterior, cephalic, cranial, superior

Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or the body

The head is superior to the abdomen

Posterior, caudal, inferior

Away from the head end o toward the lower part of a structure or body; below

The naval is inferior to the chin

Deep, central

Away from the body surface, more internal

The lungs are deep to the skin

Superficial (external)

Saggital

Saggital divides a plane into right and left

Midsaggital line divides a plane into right and left at the median or midline

Frontal/Coronal

Divides the body into anterior and posterior parts

Transverse

Runs horizontally from right to left, creating superior and inferior parts
