If the patient is in respiratory arrest? |
Deliver 1 ventilation every 5 to 6 seconds for an adult and every 3 to 5 seconds for children and infants. Each ventilation should last 1 second and make chest begin to rise. Check the pulse and breathing every 2 minutes. If no pulse, begin CPR |

Deliver 2 initial ventilations before starting CPR |
Chest compressions |
30 Center hands on the lower half of the sternum and compress to a depth of at least 2 inches at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute, allowing for full chest recoil. Should take 15-18 seconds to perform 30. |
If an advanced airway is in place? |
One provider delivers 1 ventilation every 6 seconds. At the same time, a second provider performs compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute. In this case, the compression to ventilation ratio of 30:2 does not apply because compressions and ventilations are delivered continuously with no interruptions. |
