What's a hormone?

It is a regulatory substance produced in an organism, and transported in tissue fluids, such as blood, to stimulate specific cells or tissues into action. They act like chemical messengers.

What is homeostasis ?

Homeostasis is the process of keeping constant conditions throughout the body.

Give two examples for the effect of hormones on human behaviour and studies that show them.

1- Cortisol and its effects on memory in Newcomer et al.'s experiment.

2- Oxytocin and trust in Baumgartner et al.'s experiment.

Describe Baumgartner's and Newcomer's experiments.

-Newcomer: He experimented on levels of cortisol and human declarative memory.

He experimented on three groups:

Group 1: high dose of cortisol (160 mg tablets) for 4 days

Group 2: low dose cortisol (40 mg tablets)

Group 3: no cortisol (placebo tablets)

-Baumgartner: examines the role of oxytocin in trust in economic behaviour.

Participants played a trust game which is used by economists by neuroscientists, and then they were subjected to an fMRI.
