Albany Campaign

What happened? Start of it

- organised by SCLC


- aimed to challenge segregation in Birmingham, Alabama


- protestors used non-violent methods


- Eugene "Bull" Connor


- Police violence. Protestors were beaten and set upon by dogs.


-1300 protestors were arrested and imprisoned


- president Kennedy said he was " sickened by the images and they were un-American."




What happened? After

-SCLC changed tactics and used students instead.


- Police responded by using fire hoses on them.


- King was arrested and in jail, he wrote his famous letter "letter from Birmingham"


- The events in Birmingham forced Kennedy to take action and supporting a new bill on civil rights.

Why were students used?

They were able to spend time in jail.
