What does FSH do? |
1) Causes egg mature 2) Stimulates ovaries to produce oestrogen |
What does oestrogen do? |
1) Causes LH to be produced 2) Stops FSH being produced |
What does LH do? |
1) Causes egg release |
What does progesterone do? |
Produces a thick cervical mucus which prevents sperm fertilising an egg |
What 2 hormones does 'the pill' contain? |
1) Oestrogen 2) Progesterone |
What are the 2 advantages of 'the pill'? |
1) Over 99% efficient at preventing pregnancy 2) Reduces risk of some cancer types |
What are the disadvantages of 'the pill'? |
1) Still a chance of pregnancy 2) Some side effects 3) Doesn't protect STDs |
What is IVF? |
IVF is where a woman is given FSH and LH so she produces eggs. They are then fertilised in a lab and the eggs are transferred to the woman's uterus |
What are the disadvantages of IVF? |
1) Some people have strong reactions to the hormones 2) Some reports of an increased cancer risk 3) Multiple births |
What is auxin? |
It's a hormone that controls growth in plants |
Auxin controls plant growth in response to... |
1) Light (Phototropism) 2) Gravity (Gravi/Geotropism) 3) Moisture |
Where is auxin produced? |
In the tips of shoots and roots |
What happens when a shoot tip is exposed to light? |
There is more auxin on the side in the shade so the cells on this side grow faster. This causes the shoot to bend towards the light |
What happens when a shoot is growing sideways? |
There is more auxin on the lower side so this side grows faster. This causes the shoot to grow away from gravity |
How is auxin different in the roots? |
In the roots it's the opposite to in the shoots |
How can clones of plants be made? |
Cuttings can be taken and put in a rooting powder which contains auxin so roots produce rapidly and start growing as new plants |
