What is the definition of Meiosis?
The type of cell division that produces haploid cells (gametes).
What is the difference in the cells produced by mitosis and meiosis?
Normal body cells divide by mitosis and are exact replicas of the parent cell. Gametes are formed from meiosis (sperm and egg).
What is the product of meiosis?
4 haploid nuclei
What is the diploid number and symbol in humans?
number is 2, symbol is 2n.
Happens is Prophase I.
What is the haploid number and symbol in humans?
number is 1, symbol is n.
Happens is Prophase I.
What are the stages of Meiosis?
Prophase I
Metaphase I
Anaphase I
Telephase I

Prophase II
Metaphase II
Anaphase II
Telephase II
What happens during Prophase I?
Crossover occurs, nuclear membrane disappears.
What happens during Metaphase I?
Homogolous chromosomes move to the center of the cell, held there by spindle fibres.
What happens during Anaphase I?
Chromosomes are pulled from either side of the cell by retracting spindle fibres.
What happens in Telephase I?
Cytokinesis happens and cells start to divide.
What happens in Prophase II?
Nuclear membrane goes away goes away, controls move to either side.
What happens in Metaphase II?
Chromotids line up in the middle of the cell, independent assortment takes place,
What happens in Anaphase II?
Chromotids are pulled by other side as the fibres contract.
What happens in Telephase II?
Chromotids reach either side, nuclear membrane re-forms, nucleas reappears.
What is the difference between Meiosis Stage I and Stage 2?
In Meiosis I, the chromosomes split into 2, they split again to 4 during Stage 2.
What is the difference between Anaphase I and II?
The number of chromosomes.
