What is diffusion? |
net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration down a concentration gradient through a semi-permeable membrane. (passive - requires no energy) |
What are 2 examples of diffusion in the human body? |
- oxygen in blood from lungs - nutrients in intestine to blood capillaries |
What is osmosis? |
net movement of water molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration down a concentration gradient through a semi-permeable membrane. (passive - requires no energy) |
What is active transport? |
active transport uses energy to pump ions against the concentration gradient. requires energy |
How does temperature affect diffusion? |
At higher temperatures molecules have more kinetic energy and somove and diffuse faster. |
How does pressure affect diffusion? |
Molecules move quickly from an area of higher to lower pressure. |
How does concentration affect diffusion? |
The greater the concentration gradient the greater the diffusionrate. |
