What is the major threat to biodviersity?
the major threat to biodviersity is habitat loss.
What is an example of habitat degradation?
an example of habitat degradation-- Acid rain changes the pH of soil, killing some trees.
What is NOT a cause of acid precipitation?
Destruction of the ozone layer is NOT a cause of acid precipitation.
What chemcial can produce fragile eggs in carnivourous birds if they feed on organism that have been exposed?
Carnivourous birds that fed on organisms exposed to this chemical produced fragile eggs. This chemical is DDT.
What is biodiversity?
The amount of biological diversity in an area is called biodiversity.
What is used to measure biodiversity?
The number of species in an area is a measure of biodiversity.
What is the biggest threat to biodiversity?
The biggest threat to biodiversity is habitat loss.
Why does Mexico have more biodiversity than the U.S.?
Mexico has more biodiversity than the U.S. because it is warmer (closer to the equator)
What is habitat fragmentation?
Human development often creates creates small isolated patches of wildlife area. This is known as habitat fragmentation.
What are examples problems caused by exotic species?
The actions of zebra mussels and sea lamprey in the Great Lakes are examples problems caused by exotic species
What can CFC destroy?
The use of CFCs can destroy the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere.
What is edge effect?
The patch of wildlife area may have different climate conditions around its perimeter. This is known as edge effect.
What pesticide threatened the brown pelican and the American bald eagle?
brown pelican and the American bald eagle were threatened by the use of the pesticide DDT.
Explain why biodiversity is important to people.
Within the diverse world of living things are many resources for people. These food clothing, material and medical drugs. For many people natural areas also provide beauty, recreation and inspiration.
Describe four types of threats to biodiversity?
1)Habitat loss -when wildlife areas are converted in areas of human use.
2)Habitat fragmentation-when human activites create wildlife fragments that are isolated from other natural areas.
3)Habitat Degradation- polluting natural areas,
4)Introduction of Exotics-bringing new species to places they never existed before
5)Over hunting or collecting- the capture or killing of too many organisms of a particular species.
Why can exotic species be a problem in conservation biology?
Exotic species can threaten biodiversity. When a species is released into an area where it has never lived, it may not have enemies such as organisms that eat it or diseases that infect it. Thus the exotic species may grow and reproduce rapidly. The introduced species may out compete natives species for space, food, or other resources. The introduced species may consume native species. The introduced species may altar the habitat of an area. All of these results may threaten the biodiversity of an area.
How does habitat fragmentation threaten biodiversity?
Human actions may result in habitat fragmentation, the creation of natural areas that are isolated from other natural areas. This creates problems because it restricts the mobility of organisms. This ia a big problem for large predators, which need large areas to satisfy thier nutritional needs. It can also be a problem for migratory organisms. another problem of habitat fragmentation is the edges of the fragment have different conditions than the interior. This is known as edge effect, and it may make the edges an unsuitable habitat for rare species.
Give an example of how habitat degradation threatened or threatens biodiversity.
Describe how pollution threatened or threatens a species of organisms.
1) The American bald eagle and brown pelician were threated by the use of DDT.
2)Water pollution killing oranisms in coral reefs.
Explain the relationship of distance from the equator and biodiversity.
If all other conditions are equal, the closer to the equator the more biodiveristy the habitat contains.
Why are tropical rain forest so rich in biodiversity?
Tropical rain forest are near the equator. They have lots of rain, which ensures lush plant growth and sufficient water from many animals. Finally the vertical stratification of the rain forest--layers of vegetation as you move up from the canopy floor--creates may different niches for the survival of many different organisms.
Give an example of an exotic species in Kenya.
Salvinia molesta, a floating aquatic plant, first enter Lake Naivasha in Kenya whe a person's fish ponds flooded. The plant quickly grew, chaning the habitat of part of the lake. This is an example of a problem due to EXOTIC SPECIES.
What is an example of species that extinct?
an example of species that extinct is passenger pigeon.
What are examples of habitat degradation?
Water and air pollution are examples of habitat degradation?
