What are enzymes?

Large proteins that act as biological catalysts

What is a catalyst?

A substance which increases the speed of a reaction without being changed or used up

What are proteins made up of?

Chains of amino acids folded into unique shapes

Define active site

A region on an enzyme that binds to a substance during a reaction

Define substrate

The substance on which an enzyme acts

Explain the lock and key model

Every enzyme has an active site with a unique shape that fits together with a specific substrate model, like a lock to a specific key. Enzymes usually only catalyse one specific reaction as for them to work, the substrate has to fit to the active site for the reaction to be catalysed.
