What are the overall steps of the scientific method?

Observe and create questions to develop a hypothesis, test the hypothesis (do experiment), assign variables, then repeat experiment after modifying hypothesis.

What is a null hypothesis?

Null hypothesis states that the experiment and control have no relation. We usually want to reject the null hypothesis.

What is an alternate hypothesis?

If null hypothesis is rejected, then you fail to reject the alternate hypothesis which takes into account the relationship and effects between the treatment and experiment.

Independent Variable

The manipulated variable; something you change throughout a lab. For example, adding 2mL of HCl to each treatment in an experiment.

Dependent Variable

The responding variable; the result of manipulating variables. For example, after adding 2mL of HCl to each treatment (manipulation), the pH of the solution decreased (result= dependent variable).

What is an experimental treatment?

Looking at the effect of independent variable on the dependent variable.

Control treatment

Possible effects of other factors on dependent variable other than solely the independent's effect on dependent.

Constants

Keeping certain factors the same among various treatment groups. For ex, all groups would be the same age.

Why do we create tables and graphs?

To compare results of experiment and summarize the results.
