What is a catalyst? |
A substance which increases the speed of a reaction without being changed or used up (in the reaction) |
What produce enzymes? |
Living things produce enzymes that act as biological catalysts |
All enzymes are.. |
Large proteins made up of chains of amino acids |
What happens to the chains of amino acids? |
They're folded into a unique shape which can only catalyse a specific reaction when matched with the correct substrate |
Every enzyme has.. (lock and key) |
An active site |
Is the substrate changed after a reaction? |
Yes, it is turned into products |
Is an enzyme changed after a reaction? |
No |
What happens when you increase the temperature of an enzyme catalysts reaction? |
1) At first, the rate of reaction increases 2) then it gets too hot and the bonds break 3) this changed the enzyme's shape so the substrate doesn't for anymore 4) the enzyme is DENATURED |
Optimum temperature for an enzyme in the body? |
37°C |
Temperature for denaturing an enzyme in the body? |
45°C |
What else breaks bonds in an enzyme? |
Extreme PH levels |
Optimum PH for most enzymes.. |
PH7, but generally, optimum PH is different for different enzymes |
