What are animal-like protists?
protozoans
they are included in 3 phyla:
zooflagellates/sarcodines, sporozoans, ciliates1
What are zooflagellates?
1 flagellum, free living, and symbiotic species. A. sleeping sickness, giardia: causes diarrhea,
What are sarcodines?
They are also known as amoebae. They have no visible special structures for movement, they instead move and engulf food using pseudopodia.

Foraminiferans: make calcium carbonate shells. Give us shells that are diatomic.

Radiolarians: make glass like silica shells. not photosynthetic but consume photosynthetic algae.
What are pseudopodia?
Feed by moving, they go out and find food then wrap the food in pseudopodia.
What are sporozoans?
All are parasites which have a mobile stage called a sporozoite. Plasmodium causes malaria.
What are ciliates?
Most species are solitary freshwater. Use cilia for movement and feeding. Oral groove, anal pore, two types of nuclei. Five super groups in the domain Eukaryote. Within this, there are no kingdom called protista.
What are cilia?
short hair like filaments which are made up of protein. These cilia may be a uniform covering of the organism or can be localized in patches.
What is the biggest organism ever?
It's a fungus called humongous fungus. A single clone of the "honey mushroom"
What are the two main groups of hyphae?
Septate hyphae and aseptate hyphae
What's septate hyphae?
These cells are actually separated, the septum allows one passage into the next.
