What is natural selection?
Individuals with certain heritable traits produce more viable offspring than do individuals without those traits, leading to a change in the genetic makeup of the population
What is adaptation?
A heritable trait that increases the fitness of an individual
What was the alternative to natural selection that came out of Lehigh University in the late 20th century?
Intelligent Design
Life is very complex, in fact, irreducibly complex Therefore, there must be some intelligent force that designed life |
What are the problems with Intelligent design?
Can't be tested, based on negative evidence, things would be perfect if this was true.
What is evolution?
the change in allele frequencies over time
Who was the first to propose a theory of evolution?
In 1809 Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck was the first to propose a formal theory of evolution.
He proposed that simple organisms originate at the base of the great chain of being by spontaneous generation and then evolve by moving up the chain over time. Lamarck suggested that the process responsible for this pattern was the inheritance of acquired characters. His idea was that individuals change in response to their environment and then pass on those changes to their offspring. |
