Newton's 3 laws of motion

1st law: A body at rest remains at rest and a body in motion in motion until an outside force acts on it (inertia).

2nd law: A force causes an object to accelerate.

equation---> f=mass x acceleration

3rd law: for every there is an equal & opposite reaction.

kinetic energy

energy in motion.

kinetic energy=1/2 mass(velosity)2

potential energy

stored energy; the ability of a system to do workdue to its position internal structure.

gravitation potential energy=mass x gravity x height

The Law of conservation of energy

energy cannot be created or destroyed only converted to another type of energy.

solar energy

converts energy to chemical energy.

FRICTION

the rubbing of one object or surface against another.

1.)Conduction

2.)Conduction

3.)Radiation

transfer of heat through an object from a source

tranfer of heat by liquid or gas.

heat transfered by electromagnetic waves.

Gravity

gravity will accelerate all objects at the same rate regardless of their mass. this is why a marble and a bowling ball when dropped from a building will hit the ground at the same time.

Physical properties

all properties that can be determined without changing the identity of the substance, such a color, density, phase (liquid, solid,or gas),odor, boiling & freezing points and solubility.

chemical properties

a characteristic that a substance display when it changes into a new substance.

physical change

a change that does not create a new substance.

chemical change

any change that produces a new substance.

freezing

when a liquid becomes a solid.molecules become packed tighter together moving less.

melting

occurs when a solid changes to a liquid allowing molecules to move more freely.

evaporating

when a liquid becomes a gas.the molecules are now move ing very rapidly.

condensation

sublimation

precipitation

when a gas becomes a liquid.

when ice goes from a solid directly into a gas.

during a water cycle, when clouds can no longer hold all the water from condensation, the cloud will release the water in the form of rainor snow.

density

allows objects to float or sink

d=m/v

atom

smallest particals of a of element that has all the properties of that element.

element

a pure substance that cannot be broken into simpler substances.

electrons

neutrons

protons

negitive charge

neutral charge

positive charge

wave length

amplitude

frequency

the length of one complete wavelength cycle.

a measure of the energy a wave carries.

the # of waves that pass a point in a given amount of time.

telescope

spaceship

satillites

probes

you can see things closer in outer space.

allows astronauts to travel into space.

are used to transmitt signals from space.

are sent by scientist to collect data from far away planets.

solar eclipse

lunar eclipse

occurs when the moon is in front of the sun.

occurs when the earth blocks our view of of the moon.

endothermic

exothermic

a reaction that absorbs heat from around them.

a reaction the give off heat.

3 different types of galaxies

1.) spiral

2.) eliptical

3.) irregular

fossils

a piece or a trace of an organism that was once alive they are mainly found in sedimentary rocks.

Artic tundra

Rainforest

Desert

temperatures are extremely cold year round.

is a location a because lots of precipitation.

is location b because it's copletly dry nothing but sand.

an organism that feeds off of animals only.

omnivor

an organism that feeds off both animals and plants.

ex. humans,raccoons

biotic factors

are living organisms in the envirment.

abiotic factors

are
