Homeostasis |
The maintenance of internal environment within range suitable for cell activities |
What are external stimuli? |
Heat, cold, lack of oxygen, pathogens, toxins |
What are internal stimuli? |
Body temperature, blood pressure, concentration of water, glucose, salts, oxygen, etc, physical and psychological distresses |
Homeostatic Mechanisms |
Processes and activities that help to maintain homeostasis |
3 components to maintain homeostasis |
Receptor, control center (integration center), effector |
Receptor |
Body part that can sense change. |
Stimulus |
Anything in the environment that can cause a response |
Control Center |
The body part that receives the information from the receptor and then tells the body how to respond to the change (usually CNS or endocrine organs) |
Effector |
The part that responds to the commands of the control center. Includes muscles and glands in the body |
Negative Feedback |
A stimulus produces a response that opposes the original stimulus |
Positive Feedback |
The initial stimulus produces a response that reinforces that stimulus |
What kind of feedback is the most common type and is used for conditions that need frequent adjustment? |
Negative Feedback |
