Homeostasis

The maintenance of internal environment within range suitable for cell activities

What are external stimuli?

Heat, cold, lack of oxygen, pathogens, toxins

What are internal stimuli?

Body temperature, blood pressure, concentration of water, glucose, salts, oxygen, etc, physical and psychological distresses

Homeostatic Mechanisms

Processes and activities that help to maintain homeostasis

3 components to maintain homeostasis

Receptor, control center (integration center), effector

Receptor

Body part that can sense change.

Stimulus

Anything in the environment that can cause a response

Control Center

The body part that receives the information from the receptor and then tells the body how to respond to the change (usually CNS or endocrine organs)

Effector

The part that responds to the commands of the control center. Includes muscles and glands in the body

Negative Feedback

A stimulus produces a response that opposes the original stimulus

Positive Feedback

The initial stimulus produces a response that reinforces that stimulus

What kind of feedback is the most common type and is used for conditions that need frequent adjustment?

Negative Feedback
