diffusion

tendency for small particles or molecules to spread from an area of higher concentration to one of lower concentration. A result of the constant random movements of particles which eventually become evenly distributed throughout the available space.

plasma membrane

a very selective barrier that allows certain molecules to cross it. Controls diffusion of molecules.

selective permeability

A selectively permeable cell membrane is one that allows certain molecules or ions to pass through it by means of active or passive transport

osmosis

a special case of diffusion; the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration.

magnification of drawing =

size of drawing / actual size of specimen

amyloplasts

areas of starch granule storage in potato cells.

areas of starch granule storage in potato cells.

turgid

Central vacuole is filled with water via diffusion (osmosis) thus giving internal pressure and allowing for cell rigidity.

hypertonic

when a cell is placed in a concentrated aqueous solution that has a high concentration of solute.
