What is light? (3 points)

photons with varying wavelengths

electromagnetic radiation/spectrum (400nm- 700nm) that humans can detect with eyes

no mass

How are we able to see a red shirt?

all the other wavelengths are being absorbed and the red is reflected

Draw/describe a wavelength vs absorbance graph for chlorophyll, a red car and the blue sky.

U shaped, with the lowest point where the most reflection occurs and the highest point where the most absorption occurs.

What is the function of eyespots (stigma)?

single-celled photosynthetic eukaryote use eyespots to gather info about light intensity

ex. C.reinhardtii found in ponds and lakes

What structural feature is common to all pigments?

They all have an aromatic ring, in other words a region where carbon atoms are covalently bonded to each other with alternating single and double bonds in a conjugated system

What is the difference between chlorophyll and chloroplast?

chlorophyll is the pigment

chlorolplast has double membrane and membrane-bound thylakoids - this is where plants absorb light

Describe phototaxis.

organisms move towards or away from the light i.e. the Planaria (flatworm) orient themselves in response to light
