- World = mostly land birds


- NZ = fairly even split between land, waders and seabirds.

Seabirds, Why?

- Wadders: evolved during landmass reduction (sinking)


- Seabirds: lots of coastline and outlying islands.

NZ Bird Traits

- Many primitive groups (eg ratites).


- Poor flyers/ flightlessness high that usual.


- Not many bright colours.


- Long lived slow reproduction, often ground nesting.

- 80 mya, godwana split: Wrens, thrushes, possibly moa and some parrots.

- Moa, Haast Eagle, huia ect

- NZ = Seabird capital 25% of all known species


- Seasonal migration, many islands and coast, no native predators.
