Cohesion

The linking together of like molecules, often by hydrogen bonds

Adhesion

The clinging of one substance to another, such as water to plant cell walls, by means of hydrogen bonds

Surface Tension

A measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid.

Water has a high surface tension b/c of the hydrogen bonding of surface molecules

Temperature

A measure in degrees of the average kinetic energy (thermal energy) of the atoms and molecules in a body of matter

Heat

Thermal energy in transfer from one body to another

Specific heat

The amount of heat that must be absorbed or lost for 1 g of a substance to change its temperature by 1°C

Solution

A liquid that's a homogenous mixture of 2 or more substances

Solvent

The dissolving agent of a solution

"Solvent of life"

Water

Dissolves things b/c of its polar covalent bonds

Allows living things to get & use salt, proteins, sugars, etc.

Solute

A substance that is dissolved in a solution

Acid

A substance that increases the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution

H+ > 7

Base

A substance that reduces the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution

H+ < 7

pH

Potential of the hydrogen atom

pH < 7 ----> acid

pH = 7 ----> neutral

pH > 7 ----> base

Buffer

A solution which limits pH changes in a solution

Usually a weak acid w/ a corresponding base

Ex: blood, cells, other bodily fluids

Hydrophobic

Doesn't like water

Hydrophilic

Loves water

Dense/Density

The # of individuals per unit area or volume

What's the structure of water?

-polar covalent bonds

-H bonds

4 emergent properties of water

1. cohesion

2. moderation of temperature

3. less dense solid than as a liquid

4. universal solvent

Cohesion of water (& adhesion of water)

Water sticks to itself (H2O molecules sticking to other H2O molecules)

Also adhesion: it hydrogen bonds to other molecules

Creates surface tension, this is how plants get water everywhere

Does water have high or low specific heat? What does this mean?

High

It's slower than most liquids to absorb/lose heat ---> less change in temperature. Therefore large bodies of water regulate our climate

Why is it important that water is more dense as a solid than as a liquid?

Because ice floats, and therefore life can live beneath it

Why is it important that water is the solvent of life?

It allows living cells/things/organisms to obtain and use nutrients
