What is science?
a way of learning…a body of knowledge about the natural world…collection of insights about nature (theories)
What is bias?
a partiality that prevents objective consideration
Define theory.
a general set of principles, supported by evidence, that explains some aspect of nature. Withstood vigorous testing by scientists. Unified insights.
What is belief?
something held as the truth without need of proof or testing
What is fact?
information that has objectively verified
Define control.
the unchanged version of an experiment with no variables
Life must...
assimilate and use energy, respond to its environment, maintain homeostasis, inherit info based on encoded DNA, reproduce, have more than 1 cell, have evolved from other living things, and be highly organized
What is biology?
the study/science of life, characteristics/behaviors of organisms, how species/individuals come into existence, interactions with eachother and environment
What is evolution?
the gradual modification of living things over time. Explains compexity/diversity.
In what way is science different from a belief system?
Mainly through provisional assent, meaning nothing is ever finally proven--just used until new findings arise. Everything is subject to modification--no higher laws or authority figures.
Describe the steps of the scientific method.
observation, question, hypothesis, experiment, conclusion
How did Louis Pasteur use the scientific method?
He tested his hypothesis through the meat flask experiment and concluded that his hypothesis of spontaneous generation should be rejected due to his findings.
Why would a scientist not always follow the scientific method in a strict order?
Every assertion is subject to challenge and revision, every experiment is unique
What is a controlled experiment?
2 virtually identical experiments are conducted, but the factor being tested is varied in only one of them.
Why is it important to keep all variable but one constant in a scientific experiment?
Change 1 variable at a time to verify that the variable is causing whatever changes seen (solidify conclusion)---"further isolate any casual phenomena"
Why is data more reliable the more subjects you have?
More of a sample = better representation of the population at hand. Solidifies validity of results found. Not anecdotal (personal story). lung cancer ex!!
True or false: A fact is both reproduceable and universal.
TRUE
True or false: science is about finding facts.
False: science is about theory building. Explanatory aspect of science.
