Belimicus, cum de testamento audivisset, adeo attonitus erat ut nihil respondere posset.

Belimicus, when he had heard about the will, he was so astonished that he was not able to respond.

Salvius autem haec addidit ridens:
"mi amice, cur tam attonitus es?" |
Salvius however added this laughing:
"My friend, why are you so astonished? |

"tu et Cogidubnus semper inimici eratis. num quicquam ab illo speravit?"
|
"You and Cogidubnus were always enemies. Now did you expect anything from that one?"

|
"nos autem in amicitia sumus. tibi multum debeo, ut dixisti. itaque regem te creare in animo habeo."
|
"But we are in a friendship. I owe you much, you had said. And so I have in mind to make you a king."

|
|
"sed regnum quod tibi destino multo maius est quam Cogidubni. heus! puer! plus gari!"
|
"But the kingdom I intend for you is much greater than Cogidubnus's. Hey! Boy! More (of) sauce!"

|
servus, cui Salvius hoc imperavit, statim exiit. brevi regressus, garum veneno mixtum intulit atque in Belimici pateram effudit.

The slave, to whom Salvius had ordered this, left at once. Having returned in a short time, he brought in the sauce mixed with poison and poured it out onto Belimicus's bowl.

tam laetus erat ille, ubi verba Salvii audivit, ut garum consumeret, ignarus periculi mortis.
|
That one was so happy that, when he had heard Salvius's words, that he consumed the sauce, not knowing (ignorant) of the danger of death.

"quantum est hoc regnum quod mihi promisisti? ubi gentium est?" rogavit Belimicus.
|
"How big is this kingdom which you had promised to me? Where in the world is it?" asked Belimicus.
|
|
|
Salvius cachinnans "multo maius est, " inquit, "quam imperium Romanum."
|
Salvius said cackling, "It is much greater than the Roman empire."
|
|
|
Belimicus his verbis perturbatus,
"nimium bibisti, mi amice," inquit. "nullum regnum novi maius quam imperium Romanum." |
Belimicus alarmed by these words,
"You have drunk too much, my friend," he said. "I know of no kingdom greater than the Roman empire." |

|
"regnum est, quo omnes tandem abeunt," respondit Salvius.
|
"It is a kingdom where everyone goes," responded Salvius.
|
|
|
"regnum est, unde nemo redire potest. Belimice, te regem creo mortuorum."
|
"It is a kingdom where nobody is able to return from. Belimicus, I make you the king of the dead."

|
|
Belimicus, metu mortis pallidus, surrexit.
|
Belimicus, deathly pale of fear, stood up.
|
|
|
haerebat lingua in gutture; tintinnabant aures; ventrem, qui iam graviter dolebat, prensavit.

His tongue was sticking in his throat; his ears were ringing; his stomach, which was now being extremely painful, he clutched.

metu iraque commotus exclamavit,
"tu mihi nocere non audes, quod omnia scelera tua Agricolae denuntiare possum." |
He shouted overcome with fear and anger,
"You do not dare to kill me, because I am able to reveal all of you crime to Agricola." |

"me denuntiare non potes, Belimice, quod nunc tibi imminet mors."
|
"You are not able to denounce me, Belimicua, because now death is hanging over you."
|
|
|
"nunc tibi abeundum est in regnum tuum. ave atque vale, mi Belimice."
|
"Now you must go away into your kingdom. Hail and fairwell, my Belimicus."

|
Belimicus, veneno excruciatus, pugionem tamen in Salvium coniecit, spe ultionis adductus.
|
Belimicus, tortured in excruciating pain by the poison, however threw a dagger into Salvius, encouraged by the hope of revenge.

|
deinde magnum gemitum dedit et humi decidit mortuus.
|
Then he gave a great sigh (groan) and fell down to the ground dead.
|
|
|
Salvius, pugione leviter vulteratus, servo imperavit ut medicum arcesseret.
|
Salvius, wounded slightly by the dagger, ordered his slave that he send for a doctor.
|
|
|
alii servi corpus Belimici e triclinio extractum quam celerrime cremaverunt.
|
Some slaves having taken Belimicus's body from the dining room cremated him as quickly as possible.

|
flammae, vento auctae, corpus consumperunt.
|
The flames, increased by the wind, consumed the body.
|
|
|
sic Belimicus arrogantiae poenas dedit; sic Salvius ceteris principibus persuasit ut in fide manerent.
|
In this way Belimicus gave punishment for his arrogance; thus Salvius persuaded the remaining chiefs that they stay in loyalty.
